What can I legally grow?

Explore the layers of law, licensing, resources, funding and insurance that may apply where you live or operate.

Start with your jurisdiction

These inputs organize your research; they do not calculate legal permission or transmit your address.

Choose a state to begin.

Selected purpose: personal home cultivation. Confirm current state statutes, license or registration category, plant limits, caregiver/patient eligibility, nonprofit or cooperative restrictions, county zoning, municipal rules, and property restrictions before planting. Nonprofit status or cooperative membership does not itself authorize cultivation. This page does not currently determine whether growing is legal at your location.

Hemp producer licensing

Find the state, tribal, or USDA authority that licenses hemp cultivation. A hemp license does not authorize marijuana cultivation.

City, county and state rules

Check state cultivation rules, then county zoning and city ordinances. Home-grow allowances, plant limits, indoor/outdoor rules and commercial permits vary. Never infer permission from a state alone.

Loans, grants and assistance

Look for eligible USDA farm loans, conservation assistance, extension programs and local development resources. Funding is not guaranteed; most grants are limited and program-specific.

Insurance and risk management

Compare crop insurance, whole-farm revenue protection, nursery coverage, and appropriate business liability policies. Availability and eligibility depend on location, crop, and policy terms.
